Four days of managing other people’s problems, and your own. Hard work, not much sightseeing, and the course every instructor will tell you was the best one they did.

Rescue is the first course where the diving is not the point. You spend four days learning to spot a diver in trouble before they know they are, get them to the surface, keep them breathing and get them onto a boat - and by the end you are tired in a way no other course makes you.

What it includes

Emergency First Response - CPR and first aid - runs alongside and is included in the fee. You cannot certify as a Rescue Diver without a current first aid qualification, and doing it here saves you finding one at home.

The scenarios

Days three and four are unannounced. Somebody will be missing, or panicking, or unresponsive at the surface, and you will not know it is coming. That is deliberate and it is the whole value of the course.

What you will be able to do

  • EFR first aid included
  • Unannounced scenarios
  • Prerequisite for Divemaster
  • Four intense days

What is included

  • Full equipment rental
  • Course materials and eLearning
  • Certification processing fee

Course syllabus

How the course runs, day by day - theory, confined water, then the open water dives.

  1. Day 1Emergency First Response

CPR, rescue breathing, secondary care and oxygen administration. Dry, on land, and included in the fee.

  2. Day 2Self rescue and tired diver tows

Cramp, air share, tows on the surface and the exercises that teach you how much energy a rescue actually costs.

    • 2 open water dives
  3. Day 3Panicked and unresponsive divers

Surface and underwater. Getting an unresponsive diver up on a controlled ascent, and the in-water breaths on the way to the boat.

    • 2 open water dives
  4. Day 4Two full scenarios

Unannounced, start to finish, with you running them. Debrief afterwards is honest and it is the most useful hour of the course.

    • 2 open water dives

Before you dive

The rules every student on this course is held to. None of them are negotiable, and none of them are a surprise on the day.

  • Minimum age

Divers must be 12 or older on the day of the dive.

  • Medical declaration

Every student signs the agency medical declaration before the first water session. A yes to anything on it needs a physician's sign-off, and we would far rather see that form at the enquiry stage than at the pool.
  • Flying after diving

Leave at least 18 hours between your last dive and your flight. Book your trip home with that gap already in it - we cannot shorten it for you.

  • Insurance

Student divers are covered by our centre insurance during training, which is not the same thing as personal dive cover. We recommend your own policy for the fun dives that follow.

This is general guidance for recreational diving, not medical advice about you. If any of it is a question rather than a formality, speak to a doctor before you travel.

Questions students ask

  • Do I need EFR already?

You need a current first aid and CPR qualification from any recognised provider, taken within the last two years. If you do not have one, take the combined option.

  • How fit do I need to be?

Fitter than for any other recreational course. Towing an unresponsive diver a hundred metres is genuinely hard work, and there is no way to make it not be.

  • Is it enjoyable?

Not in the way a fun dive is. Almost everybody says afterwards it was the best course they have done.

Not sure this is the right course? Tell us how much diving you have done and we will point you at the one that fits.

From our divers

What people say once the boat is back in

  • I did Rescue here after doing Open Water and Advanced elsewhere, and the difference in how a course is run was obvious from the first morning. Four of us, unannounced scenarios, and a debrief that told me exactly what I got wrong. Hardest four days of diving I have done.
