Reading the depth rules

Every site on this page draws its depth on the same 0 to 45 m rule, with marks at 18 m and 30 m - where an Open Water certification stops, and where recreational diving stops. A site whose band sits entirely left of the first mark is one you can dive on your first certification; a band crossing the second is one we will only run for Advanced divers.

The visibility and temperature figures are working season averages logged by our guides, not a best-day number. What they cannot tell you is what the water is doing on the morning you arrive - that call gets made at the jetty, and we would rather move a dive than sell you a crossing.

Questions we get asked

  • Which sites can I dive as an Open Water diver?

    Anything whose depth band sits inside 18 m - Jackson Bar, Turtle Bay, Junction, Bus Stop, Aquarium, Lighthouse and Jolly Buoy, plus The Wall to your own limit. Dixon and Johnny’s Gorge need Advanced.

  • Can I request a particular site?

    Yes, and the answer depends on the conditions on the day. Tell your guide the evening before and they will plan for it where the sea allows.

  • How far are the boat rides?

    Between fifteen and forty-five minutes. Each site page gives its own figure, and the two shore entries need no boat at all.

  • What is the water temperature?

    Between 27 and 31 degrees through the season. A 3 mm shorty is plenty and rental suits are included.
