Discover Scuba Diving is the programme for people who are not sure. It is not a course and it does not certify you; what it does is put you underwater with a professional holding onto you, at a depth you could swim up from, for about thirty-five minutes.
What you learn
Four things, and only four: how to breathe on a regulator, how to equalise your ears, how to clear water out of a mask, and the hand signals that matter. Everything else your instructor does for you.
What happens next
Most people book the Open Water course before the boat is back at the jetty. If that is you, the fee you paid today comes off it, and this dive counts as the first of the four.
What you will be able to do
- No certification needed
- One instructor per diver
- 12 m maximum depth
- Counts toward Open Water
What is included
- Full equipment rental
- Confined water session
- Underwater photos
Where you train
Course syllabus
How the course runs, day by day - theory, confined water, then the open water dives.
Session 1Briefing and confined water
Twenty minutes on land covering breathing, equalising, mask clearing and signals, then the same four skills in water shallow enough to stand up in.
Session 2Your first open water dive
A slow descent down a line at Turtle Bay, then a swim over the coral at whatever depth you are comfortable with, to a maximum of 12 m. Your instructor is within arm's reach the whole time.
- 1 open water dive
What it costs
Every price below is the full course fee, taxes included. Nothing is added at checkout - there is no checkout yet, so tell us your dates and we will hold your place.
- One dive, one instructor, photographs included.
Courses start on the dates that suit you. Tell us when you are on the island and we will schedule your first session.
From the water
Before you dive
The rules every student on this course is held to. None of them are negotiable, and none of them are a surprise on the day.
Minimum age
Divers must be 10 or older on the day of the dive.
Medical declaration
Every student signs the agency medical declaration before the first water session. A yes to anything on it needs a physician's sign-off, and we would far rather see that form at the enquiry stage than at the pool.Flying after diving
Leave at least 12 hours between your last dive and your flight. Book your trip home with that gap already in it - we cannot shorten it for you.
Insurance
Student divers are covered by our centre insurance during training, which is not the same thing as personal dive cover. We recommend your own policy for the fun dives that follow.
This is general guidance for recreational diving, not medical advice about you. If any of it is a question rather than a formality, speak to a doctor before you travel.
Questions students ask
Is this a certification?
No. It is a supervised experience dive. The certification you are thinking of is Open Water, which takes three to four days.
Do I need to swim?
No, and you do not need to pass a swim test. Tell us at the enquiry stage and we run it one-to-one in the shallow half of the bay.
How much of the day does it take?
About four hours door to door, of which thirty-five minutes are underwater.

What people say once the boat is back in
Two teenagers, neither of whom had dived. The instructors worked one-to-one with both of them for the first two dives without us asking, and my daughter has since booked her Open Water for next December. Whatever they did, it worked.
The Fernandes familyFour divers, two of them under fifteen I cannot swim well and I said so when I booked. They ran the whole thing one instructor to one diver, stayed in the shallow half of the bay, and never once made it feel like a concession. I have since done the swim assessment and the full course.
